Last season Arsenal's left matched or beat the top six on shots, dribbles and goals + assists. Both men who played there have gone, and Tzolis, who replaced them, is out with a hamstring injury. Of 120 left wingers, three pass our filters and project, on average, to replace what left. One costs less than Tzolis did.
Our answer.
- Under a Tzolis-sized fee: Derry Scherhant, Freiburg, 24. Reported price about £14m to £15m.
- A stretch: Antonio Nusa, RB Leipzig, 21. Reported at around £60m, and Leipzig reportedly won't sell mid-season.
- Best player, wrong January: Kenan Yıldız, Juventus, 21. Injured until about the end of November, valued at €100m to €150m.
Nusa and Scherhant pass at every club cut we tried. How many make it, and who, depends on where we draw that line: at 15, Jesús Rodríguez comes in and Scherhant drops to fourth; at 25, Yıldız drops out and only two pass. See How we picked.
What the left had, and has
Last season Leandro Trossard made 21 starts on the left and Gabriel Martinelli 11. Between them they matched the left wingers of the Premier League's top six on shots and beat them on dribbles and goals + assists. Trossard went to Besiktas for £17m and Martinelli to Al-Hilal for £60m. Christos Tzolis came from Club Brugge for a reported £34m and has started 5 of 7 league games on the left. Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze have started one each. At Forest, Madueke came on for Eze at half-time and scored the winner (ArsenalNews).

Top-six left wingers: the 6 players our lineups list as left wingers at the six Premier League clubs rated highest by our club ratings, 900+ minutes (A. Adli, C. Gakpo, E. Buendía, Gabriel Martinelli, J. Doku, L. Trossard), so it includes Trossard and Martinelli themselves. Tzolis so far: 365 league minutes in our latest stats pull. That is far too few to judge him on.
So what is missing? Two things. A second left winger: there is one natural left winger in the squad now, where there were two, and he is out. Tzolis went off with a hamstring injury playing for Greece in the October break, and Arteta says he will miss a few weeks. Reports on 2 October expected him back in late October or early November (now.arsenal). And so far, end product: Tzolis is taking 0.7 shots per 90, well below our forecast of 1.8, which allows for the step up from Belgium. That forecast is for a full season and 365 minutes is not one. Either way, the left has no fallback.
How we picked
We wrote the method down before looking at a single name. The test as written found no output gap last season, so no one passed it. That is an honest answer, but it was about last season. Everything below answers the follow-up we declared after seeing that: who could replace the output that left? Our registered price rule, the fees paid for similar players, failed a sanity check (it priced Yıldız at £4.5m), so we use reported prices instead.
- 120 left wingers. Listed as a left winger by our lineups last season, or 10+ starts on the left; 900+ league minutes; under 27 on 1 January 2027; playing this season; in our 14 divisions.
- 28 for whom Arsenal is a natural next step. Arsenal ranks in the top quarter of every club he could move to, on our destination score. Tested on 920 real moves: the club a player actually joined ranked 82% of the way up on average. Here it runs from his current club, which that test did not cover.
- 9 at clubs that sell in January. We dropped players their club signed this summer (only 90 of 1,299 January sales from 2023 to 2026 were) and players at the 20 highest-rated clubs in our ratings. These two filters were added after we declared the follow-up. Without them the top three would be Vinícius Júnior, M. Godts, J. Doku, none of whom their clubs would sell in January.
- 3 whose projection, averaged over the four measures, is above what left. Shots, key passes, dribbles and goals + assists, each against what Arsenal's left produced last season. Dribbles do most of the work: Scherhant projects below last season's left on shots and key passes.
Where we draw the club line changes the list. Juventus is the 22nd-rated club, just outside the top-20 cut. Como and Brighton are inside it.

The machine learning, scored on moves it never saw
The projection was trained on 779 moves into 2023/24 and 2024/25, and tested on 389 moves into 2025/26. Each model had to beat a simple baseline before we would use it. Most didn't.
| Next season, per 90 | No change | Simple baseline | Ridge | Boosting | Used | 80% range held |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shots | 0.399 | 0.360 | 0.357 | 0.367 | Simple baseline | 84% |
| Key passes | 0.407 | 0.373 | 0.363 | 0.378 | Simple baseline | 83% |
| Dribbles attempted | 0.581 | 0.518 | 0.533 | 0.566 | Simple baseline | 85% |
| Goals + assists | 0.162 | 0.141 | 0.132 | 0.138 | Ridge | 79% |
Average error on the test moves, lower is better. The simple baseline pulls last season's number towards the average. Ridge regression beat it only for goals + assists (-0.009 per 90, 95% interval -0.016 to -0.002). Gradient boosting never cleared the bar. Where machine learning did not earn its place, we used the baseline. An 80% range should hold eight times in ten; ours held 79% to 85%. Since the update, shots also adjust for a change of league: average error 0.349 on the same 389 moves. The shots ranges are the baseline's, moved by the same amount; we have not re-scored how often those held.

Goals + assists adjusted for a move to Arsenal; the rest is his own numbers pulled towards the average, with shots also adjusted for the change of league.
For
- Takes players on: 5.5 dribbles per 90 last season, twice what Arsenal's left managed.
- Lowest injury risk of the three, and the cheapest by a distance.
Against
- Only 1,308 league minutes last season. Our ranges don't widen for that, so his are too narrow.
- Few touches: 15.6 passes per 90 against 29.7 from Arsenal's left last season. A runner, not a link player.
- Reported price
- €16.5m to €17.5m, about £14m to £15m. Freiburg's reported price when Ipswich asked, August 2026.
- Yearly squad cost
- £3.1m to £3.3m a year in fee alone, spread over a contract to June 2031. Wages on top.
- Contract

Open his player card →On the edge: Jesús Rodríguez
Como's left winger, 21 on 1 January 2027. His projection averages 1.17 times what Arsenal's left produced, above Nusa and Scherhant, and he passes every filter except one: Como are the 17th-rated club in our ratings, inside the top-20 cut. Draw the line at 15 and he is in, second, ahead of Nusa, which pushes Scherhant out of the three. Como paid Betis €22m for him in 2025 on a contract to 2030, and in March reports put Como's price around €55m (BeSoccer, TransferFeed).
Money: what fits the rules
From this season the Premier League caps squad costs (wages, transfer fees spread over the contract, and agents' fees) at 85% of revenue. It checks on 1 March, straight after the January window. UEFA's version, which applies to clubs in Europe, is stricter at 70%. In 2024/25 Arsenal's revenue was £690.3m and wages £346.8m. With fee spreading of about £172m (our figure, derived from the published accounts), wages and fees came to about 75% of revenue on a simple basis. The rules count differently: Greg Cordell estimates Arsenal at about 62% on UEFA's measure.
- 1% of Arsenal's revenue is about £6.9m a year.
- Scherhant's reported price adds about £3.1m to £3.3m a year in fee. Nusa's about £11m to £13m. Yıldız's £19m to £28m.
- We have no wage data, so every figure here is a floor. Wages come on top.
- We can't compute Arsenal's room under the rules exactly: the 2025/26 accounts are not out, and summer 2026 brought £77m in from Martinelli and Trossard, and new signings including Tzolis.
What this can't tell you
- Whether a club will sell. Our filters use what clubs have done in January before. Leipzig and Juventus say no, and the prices above are reported, not ours.
- Wages and contracts. We don't have them.
- Fit with Arteta's system. Scherhant in particular is a different player from Trossard.
- Our forecast for Tzolis is well above what he has done so far. Same model, a few games in. If he settles, the need is depth, not a starter.
- This is a follow-up, not the registered test. The registered test found no output gap.
- The top-20 cut is a judgement call. Juventus sits just outside it, and moving it five places either way changes who makes the three, and how many.
